What's in Your Nose?

This morning when I woke up my plan for the day was to get the kids and I ready, shop at Costco, come home and get some cleaning done, make dinner, and then do some regular grocery shopping once the kids went to bed. However, my plans were terribly derailed before ten o'clock this morning....

Grafton was busy building a birdhouse with blocks and Deklan was playing on the family-room floor while watching Curious George when I left them for about one minute to run their bath water. When I came back and said, "It's time for a bath," Deklan responded by putting his finger up his left nostril and then trying to blow air out of his nose. I took a look and could see something yellowish inside. It wasn't very far up so I decided to try and get it myself with a bobby pin.

I never got a good try because just forcing Deklan to lay across my legs while I brought a bobby pin close to his nose caused him to get very upset and suck up the object even farther. At this point I knew I needed reinforcement and made an appointment with our pediatrician for an hour later.

We did not get to see Deklan's usual doctor since our appointment was made last minute, and this doctor, Dr. Yin, did not seem too confident in her object lodging skills. She told me she's not a surgeon, so she'd give it one try and then have someone else work on him.

The first try did not go so well. I held Deklan's hands while the Dr. Yin tried to dislodge the object and keep his head still. He's a strong little boy and we couldn't keep him still enough, so Dr. Yin grabbed a nurse to hold his hands while I sustained is legs. It was terrible! Deklan was screaming "Momma," and after what felt like a long time, the doctor still could not get the object out.

At this point I was starting to panic a little and while Dr. Yin left the room to find another doctor to give it a try, I quickly sent a text to Vince that simply said, "Pray!".

This time our prayers worked! It still took three of us to hold Deklan down while he screamed and cried "Momma," but the object finally came out.

It was hard, bloody and large and we couldn't figure out what it was at first. Finally it occurred to me, it was the foot of a plastic dinosaur that Sophie must have chewed off.

The nurse practitioner actually threw it in the trash, but I had to dig it out to prove how large it really was and keep the memento of Deklan's crazy mishap.

I guess this will be one of my many adventures in being a mom of boys!
