I felt like we should tell our kids the truth because I want them to know whenever they ask me a question they'll always get an honest answer (which was my mom's policy as I was growing up).
Vince, however, felt like it's a magical time for kids and that there's nothing wrong with going along with the Santa fantasy while they're young.
I honestly don't feel like either one of us was wrong in our opinion, and because our boys are still so young, we hadn't had to address this issue, that is, until now....
On Sunday morning before church I put in a DVD for the boys that had a preview for a Christmas movie. Afterwards Grafton said, "Can we leave milk and cookies out for Santa this year?" To which my reply was, "Of course!"
A few seconds later he responded with, "Mom, is Santa Claus really real?"
I had only a quick moment to decide how to handle this as I was looking down into his big, blue expectant eyes. I finally said, "Santa lives in our imagination, but we can pretend that he's real."
Grafton looked disappointed for about 5 seconds and then said, "Can we still leave him milk & cookies and then you can eat them?"
"Definitely!" I replied, and that seemed to satisfy him.
I'm glad we got that one out of the way!
